Malaysia Airlines is resuming direct flights between Kuala Lumpur and Fukuoka, Japan, from September 2, 2026, ending a gap of almost 20 years since the airline last served the route in September 2006. The new service will fly five times a week — Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday — connecting the airport covered in our Kuala Lumpur complete guide directly to Japan’s Kyushu region.
Why It’s Notable
Malaysia Airlines will be the only carrier operating a nonstop, direct service between Kuala Lumpur and Fukuoka at launch, giving travelers a one-flight option to a Japanese city that’s otherwise typically reached via Tokyo, Osaka, or a connection through another Southeast Asian hub. Fukuoka is Kyushu’s largest city and a common gateway for onward travel to Nagasaki, Kumamoto, and the rest of southern Japan.
Part of a Wider Route Expansion
The Fukuoka relaunch comes alongside Malaysia’s broader push to add international capacity ahead of Visit Malaysia Year 2026 — the country added 21 new international routes across nine airports in the preceding months, and Malaysia Airlines and its regional arm AirBorneo have both announced additional new destinations as part of the same expansion.
What This Means for Travelers
If a Japan side trip is part of a longer Malaysia itinerary, the new route removes a connection you’d otherwise need to build in. For planning the Malaysia side of the trip, our 2-week itinerary covering Peninsular Malaysia and Borneo and our guide to getting around Kuala Lumpur both cover the ground you’ll want before flying onward.
