New KLIA1 customs checks now happen at the boarding gate instead of twice, after Terminal 1 simplified its departure process on January 1, 2026. Previously, international departing passengers at the terminal covered in our Kuala Lumpur complete guide went through one security check right after immigration and a second one at the gate; now it’s just the gate check.
Why KLIA1 Customs Checks Moved to the Gate
The Ministry of Transport says the change is meant to “improve the flow of passengers through the terminals during peak travel periods” and “expedite the boarding process.” The adjustment was coordinated between Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd, the Ministry of Transport, the Royal Malaysian Customs Department (RMCD), and the Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency, who say passenger and goods inspection standards haven’t been reduced — just consolidated into one checkpoint instead of two.
Who’s Affected
The KLIA1 customs checks change applies to all international departing passengers at that terminal specifically — KLIA2, used mainly by AirAsia and other low-cost carriers, and KLIA Terminal 2 aren’t covered by this particular announcement. If you’re flying out on a full-service international carrier from Terminal 1, expect one screening at your gate rather than a screening immediately after immigration plus a second one before boarding.
What This Means for Travelers
In practice, this should mean less time spent in security lines and a smoother path from immigration to your gate, especially during busy departure banks. It doesn’t change entry requirements on the way in — see our Malaysia visa guide for that — and once you land, our guide to getting around Kuala Lumpur covers the trip from the airport into the city.
