KLIA’s New Autogate System Cuts Wait Times Nearly in Half

KLIA immigration wait times have been cut nearly in half by Kuala Lumpur International Airport’s new autogate system, according to figures released in December 2025 — from an average of 111 minutes down to about 50 minutes, a reduction of roughly 55%. That’s a bigger improvement than the government’s original 30% target, and it lands just ahead of Visit Malaysia Year 2026, when the airport covered in our Kuala Lumpur complete guide expects a busier-than-usual year of arrivals.

What Cut KLIA Immigration Wait Times

KLIA added 40 new QR code-enabled autogate counters across Terminals 1 and 2, along with 10 additional staffed immigration counters, and set up a Quick Response Team specifically to manage peak-hour surges. Instead of a manual passport check and biometric scan at every counter, travelers can now clear the gate by scanning a face and a QR code — one traveler quoted in local coverage described it as “I just walk to the autogate, get my face scanned and scan my QR code, and it’s done,” with individual clearance often taking under 10 seconds.

Why KLIA Immigration Wait Times Matter

Long KLIA immigration wait times have historically been one of the more frustrating parts of arriving in Kuala Lumpur, especially during peak season or when several wide-body flights land close together. The upgrade is part of a broader civil service reform push, and follows on from the government’s separate MyNIISe QR code rollout planned for four Malaysian airports from March 2026.

What This Means for Travelers

Faster processing doesn’t change the entry requirements — see our Malaysia visa guide for who needs a visa and how the Digital Arrival Card works. Once you’re through immigration, our guide to getting around Kuala Lumpur by LRT, MRT, and Grab covers the trip from KLIA into the city.
