Malaysia’s Immigration Department is rolling out a new Malaysia QR code immigration system, called MyNIISe, at four international airports starting March 1, 2026 — Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), Penang International Airport, Kuching International Airport, and Kota Kinabalu International Airport. Anyone flying into or out of these four cities, covered in our Kuala Lumpur, Penang & George Town, Kuching & Sarawak, and Kota Kinabalu & Mount Kinabalu complete guides, will see the new e-gates at immigration.
How the Malaysia QR Code Immigration System Works
Travelers generate a unique QR code through a mobile app before reaching the immigration counter, then scan it at an automated e-gate. The system cross-checks the code against passport and arrival data and grants entry or exit automatically, without a manual passport stamp check at the counter. Malaysia is installing 46 of these e-gates across its busiest terminals, including both KLIA Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, replacing the older myIMMS system.
Part of a Wider Digital Push
MyNIISe connects to Malaysia’s broader MyDigital ID project, which Malaysian citizens began using for government services on January 15, 2026. For foreign visitors, the rollout follows on from KLIA’s autogate upgrade in late 2025, which already cut average immigration wait times by more than half — both moves are part of the government’s push to speed up border processing ahead of Visit Malaysia Year 2026.
What This Means for Travelers
This Malaysia QR code immigration rollout doesn’t change who needs a visa or an entry permit — check our Malaysia visa guide for that, and remember the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card is still required separately before you fly. What changes is speed: expect a faster, more automated pass through immigration at these four airports from March 2026 onward, with fewer manual counter checks during peak arrival times.
