The JW Marriott Hotel Johor Bahru is coming: YTL Hotels and Marriott International have confirmed the new property, set to open in December 2026 — a new luxury option in a city that’s quickly becoming a key gateway for cross-border travel.
What’s opening: the JW Marriott Hotel Johor Bahru
The JW Marriott Hotel Johor Bahru is a joint project between YTL Hotels and Marriott International, scheduled to open its doors in December 2026. It brings JW Marriott’s luxury brand to Johor Bahru for the first time.
Why Johor Bahru, why now
Johor Bahru is gaining importance as the Malaysian gateway for the Johor Bahru-Singapore RTS Link rail project — though as of early October 2026, that project’s own passenger-service start was pushed back from January to February 2027 (Transport Minister Anthony Loke cited extra time needed for safety approvals), so it now opens a couple of months after this hotel rather than alongside it. Once running, it will cut the cross-border commute to Singapore to just minutes — on top of existing options covered in our Singapore-Malaysia land crossing guide. A new luxury hotel opening alongside that infrastructure milestone makes JB a more attractive base for travelers splitting time between Malaysia and Singapore.
What it means for your trip
If you’re planning a Malaysia-Singapore itinerary for early 2027, Johor Bahru is worth a look as a base — you’ll have a new luxury option in place before the direct rail link to Singapore comes online (now targeted for February 2027), letting you combine both destinations more easily than before.
