February brings Malaysia’s biggest cultural celebration of the year, bookended by two smaller but genuinely photogenic events in Kuala Lumpur and Penang — while the northeast monsoon finally starts loosening its grip, though not everywhere at once.
If you are planning a trip to Malaysia in February 2027, here are the confirmed events and dates worth building your trip around, along with what the weather is actually doing and where that leaves your options.
Best Malaysia Events in February 2027
| Date | Event | Location | Type |
|---|---|---|---|
| February 1 | Federal Territory Day | Merdeka Square, Kuala Lumpur | Public Holiday |
| February 6–7 | Chinese New Year | Nationwide | Public Holiday & Cultural Festival |
| February 20 | Chap Goh Meh | Esplanade, George Town, Penang | Cultural Festival |
1. Federal Territory Day — February 1, 2027
Location: Merdeka Square, Kuala Lumpur
Date: February 1, 2027
Type: Public holiday (Kuala Lumpur, Labuan, Putrajaya)
Federal Territory Day marks the anniversary of Kuala Lumpur’s formation as a federal territory in 1974, and is a public holiday in Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya (though not the rest of the country). Celebrations have historically centered on Merdeka Square, with the day traditionally bringing parades, concerts, stage shows and other events at designated venues around the city, along with fireworks.
It’s a low-key holiday compared to the bigger festivals later in the month, but it does mean government offices and some businesses in the three federal territories are closed, and central KL sees a quieter Monday than usual around Merdeka Square.

2. Chinese New Year — February 6–7, 2027
Location: Nationwide
Dates: February 6–7, 2027
Type: Public holiday and cultural festival
Chinese New Year is Malaysia’s biggest festival after Hari Raya, and 2027 marks the Year of the Fire Goat. It’s a two-day public holiday across most of the country — Kelantan and Terengganu observe only the first day — with the run-up to it often more visible to travelers than the holiday itself: shopping malls decorated in red and gold from mid-January, lion dance troupes performing in shopping centers, and mandarin oranges everywhere.
In Kuala Lumpur, Thean Hou Temple is one of the most striking places to see the season’s decorations, strung with thousands of red lanterns. Petaling Street and the wider Chinatown district are worth visiting both in the days before (for the pre-holiday market bustle) and during Chap Goh Meh at the end of the festival period, though note that many family-run shops and hawker stalls close for two to four days over the holiday itself, especially away from tourist-heavy areas.
Domestic flights, trains and highways get significantly busier in the days immediately before and after Chinese New Year as people travel back to hometowns, so book transport and hotels earlier than usual if your trip overlaps this week.
For where to find festive food while shops are closed, see our guide to Kuala Lumpur’s best hawker centers and night markets.
3. Chap Goh Meh — February 20, 2027
Location: Esplanade, George Town, Penang
Date: February 20, 2027
Type: Cultural festival
Chap Goh Meh falls on the 15th and final day of the Chinese New Year period and is sometimes called Chinese Valentine’s Day. Penang holds the country’s best-known celebration at the Esplanade in George Town, where the evening typically runs from around 5pm into the night with lion dance performances, drum troupes, Chingay flag-bearing processions, street food stalls and fireworks.
The event’s signature tradition is orange tossing: unmarried women write their names and phone numbers on mandarin oranges and throw them into the water, a custom said to bring good luck in finding a partner. It draws a large local crowd, so arrive early for a decent view of the waterfront stage.

February in Malaysia: What Travelers Should Know
February sits at the tail end of the northeast monsoon, and the coastal divide is still firmly in effect, though starting to ease. The east coast islands — Tioman, Redang and the Perhentians — remain largely closed for the season, with most resorts reopening around March 1st rather than in February, and rough seas continuing on the mainland coast around Kuantan and Kota Bharu.
The west coast stays the better choice: Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Langkawi see comparatively dry, sunny conditions with daytime highs around 31–33°C (88–91°F), making February a solid month for city sightseeing and west-coast beaches alike. Cameron Highlands stays cool at around 22°C (72°F) in the day. Sabah and Sarawak see warm, humid weather with a chance of afternoon rain.
A few practical points for February 2027 specifically:
- Skip Tioman, Redang and Perhentian this month — resorts are generally still closed until around March 1st.
- Expect many family-run restaurants and shops to close for several days around Chinese New Year (February 6–7) — plan meals around larger malls or hawker centers if traveling then.
- Ramadan is expected to begin around February 8, 2027 (the exact date depends on moon sighting) — some Muslim-owned eateries adjust daytime hours, while evening Ramadan bazaars begin appearing in the weeks that follow.
- Book domestic flights, trains and hotels early if your trip overlaps Chinese New Year week, as this is one of the busiest domestic travel periods of the year.
