Malaysia Events December 2026: BTS in KL, Penang Bridge Marathon & Christmas

December closes out the year in Malaysia with two very different kinds of pull: a headline international concert and a coast-to-coast marathon on the peninsula, and the usual wind-down of Christmas and New Year celebrations in the cities. The northeast monsoon is still firmly in charge, so where you go matters as much as when.

If you are planning a trip to Malaysia in December 2026, here are the confirmed events and dates worth building your trip around, along with what the weather is actually doing and where that leaves your options.

1. BTS World Tour “Arirang” in Kuala Lumpur — December 12–13, 2026

Location: Bukit Jalil National Stadium, Kuala Lumpur
Dates: December 12–13, 2026
Type: International concert

BTS bring their “Arirang” World Tour to Kuala Lumpur for two nights at Bukit Jalil National Stadium, one of the biggest single-artist bookings the city has seen in years. Tickets are sold through Live Nation Malaysia, and given the size of the group’s regional fanbase, this is expected to be one of the most in-demand shows of the year across Southeast Asia.

Two consecutive show nights mean heavier-than-usual traffic and crowding around Bukit Jalil on both evenings, plus a spike in demand for hotels within reach of the stadium and the LRT/KTM lines that serve it. If you’re not attending, it’s worth avoiding the immediate area around the venue on those two nights, particularly around load-in and after each show ends.

For getting around the city on show days, see our guide to getting around Kuala Lumpur by LRT, MRT and Grab.

2. Penang Bridge International Marathon — December 13, 2026

Location: ASPEN Vision City, Batu Kawan, Penang
Date: December 13, 2026
Type: International road race

The Penang Bridge International Marathon is one of Malaysia’s signature races, sending runners across the Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah Bridge (the second Penang Bridge) between Batu Kawan on the mainland and Batu Maung on Penang island. Since 2024 the race has started and finished at ASPEN Vision City in Batu Kawan, with categories ranging from a 10km run to the full marathon.

Because the full marathon starts as early as 1:30am to beat both the heat and daytime bridge traffic, this is very much a race built around its landmark setting rather than a conventional city-center event. Race pack collection runs across several weekends in late November and early December at venues on both sides of the strait, so runners flying in should check the official schedule well ahead of race week.

For the rest of what to see while you’re on the island for race weekend, see our Penang & George Town complete guide.

3. Christmas Day — December 25, 2026

Location: Nationwide
Date: December 25, 2026
Type: Public holiday

Christmas is a nationwide public holiday in Malaysia, and while the country is majority Muslim, its sizeable Christian communities in Sabah, Sarawak and the peninsula’s cities mean the season is visible well beyond church services. Kuala Lumpur’s malls compete on tree and light displays from late November onward, and Christmas markets and festive food menus run through the month in shopping centers such as Pavilion and Suria KLCC.

Christmas falls in the middle of Malaysia’s short year-end school holidays, so domestic flights, trains and popular attractions get noticeably busier in the days around it — book transport and hotels for this period earlier than you would for an ordinary December weekend.

For the wider picture of how Malaysia’s holidays cluster through the year, see our public holidays and festival calendar.

4. New Year’s Eve Countdown — December 31, 2026

Location: Kuala Lumpur (KLCC and Bukit Bintang areas)
Date: December 31, 2026
Type: Countdown celebration

Kuala Lumpur’s New Year’s Eve countdown centers on the KLCC park in front of the Petronas Twin Towers and the Bukit Bintang shopping district, where crowds gather for fireworks and, in recent years, coordinated light and drone shows timed to midnight. Individual venues and malls typically confirm their specific 2026 programming closer to the date, but the KLCC Park vantage point and the streets around Bukit Bintang are the reliable default each year.

Roads around KLCC and Bukit Bintang close to traffic in the hours before midnight and the LRT stations serving both areas get extremely busy immediately afterward, so plan on walking a distance to find transport, or booking a hotel within walking distance of wherever you plan to watch from.

If you’re spending the holiday period in the city, our weekend in Kuala Lumpur stopover itinerary covers the rest of what’s worth doing around the city center.

5. Limp Bizkit — One-Stop Asia Show — December 9, 2026

Location: National Hockey Stadium, Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur
Date: December 9, 2026
Type: International rock concert

Limp Bizkit play their only Asia date of the year in Kuala Lumpur, a one-off stop billed as the One-Stop Asia Show at the National Hockey Stadium in Bukit Jalil — the same sports precinct as the BTS shows a few days later.

With BTS in town December 12–13 and Limp Bizkit on December 9, Bukit Jalil sees two very different sold-out crowds inside the same week — expect elevated hotel demand across the whole precinct for the first half of December.

6. Khalid — It’s Always Summer Somewhere Tour — December 9, 2026

Location: Idea Live Arena, Petaling Jaya
Date: December 9, 2026
Type: International pop/R&B concert

American R&B and pop singer Khalid plays Idea Live Arena in Petaling Jaya, making up for a previously cancelled Kuala Lumpur date as part of his It’s Always Summer Somewhere tour.

Idea Live Arena is in Petaling Jaya rather than central KL, so factor in extra travel time from hotels in the city center or Bukit Bintang.

7. BOYNEXTDOOR — December 26, 2026

Location: Unifi Arena, Kuala Lumpur
Date: December 26, 2026
Type: K-pop concert

K-pop group BOYNEXTDOOR play their first-ever Malaysia concert at Unifi Arena, closing out a December that already includes BTS, Limp Bizkit and Khalid.

This is a rare stretch — four major international acts across a single Kuala Lumpur month — so if you’re timing a trip around live music, December 2026 is an unusually strong month to visit.

December in Malaysia: What Travelers Should Know

December sits deep in the northeast monsoon, and the coastal divide that shapes the rest of the season is at its sharpest. The east coast of Peninsular Malaysia — Kuantan, Terengganu, Kota Bharu and the islands of Tioman, Redang and the Perhentians — sees heavy rain, rough seas and closed island resorts for the entire month. This remains the one part of the country to avoid for a beach trip.

The west coast is the clear exception: Langkawi, Penang and Melaka see daytime highs around 24–32°C (75–89°F) with comparatively limited rainfall, making December one of the west coast’s better months for beach weather — which is exactly why the Penang Bridge Marathon is scheduled here rather than on the east coast. Kuala Lumpur and Melaka stay generally accessible for sightseeing and shopping, with only occasional afternoon showers. Cameron Highlands stays cool and misty around 19°C (66°F) in the day, while Sabah and Sarawak see warm, humid conditions with frequent tropical downpours.

A few practical points for December 2026 specifically:

  • Skip Tioman, Redang and Perhentian entirely this month — resorts are closed for the monsoon season.
  • Book Kuala Lumpur hotels and transport early if your dates overlap with December 12–13 (BTS) or the year-end school holidays around Christmas and New Year.
  • Pack rain gear regardless of coast — even the “better” west coast sees short afternoon downpours.
  • If you’re heading to Penang for the marathon, confirm your race-pack collection slot ahead of time, since collection is spread across several weekends before race day.

Where to Stay for Malaysia Events in December

Kuala Lumpur is the obvious base this month, covering both the BTS concert at Bukit Jalil and the New Year’s Eve countdown at KLCC — though the two events pull toward different sides of the city, so pick a neighborhood based on which one matters more to your trip. See our Kuala Lumpur complete guide for an overview of the city’s main areas.

Penang is the base for marathon weekend, with George Town’s old town giving you somewhere worth exploring once the race is over. See our guide to the best heritage boutique hotels in George Town.
